CIS is an autonomous state agency attached
to the Office of the Presidency, whose purpose is to study Spanish
society, primarily through survey-based research.
The present physionomy and name is dated to 1977 - its predecessor,
the Instituto de la Opinión Pública (IOP) [Institute of Public Opinion]
was founded in 1963. Since the outset, the CIS has been a privileged
witness of the huge changes that took place in the Spanish society and
has contributed, with over 1,200 public opinion surveys, to a better
understanding of the new social and political realities emerging
during the last quarter of the century.
