SSD was initiated in 1980 by the Swedish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Originally a project at the Department of Political Science, University of Göteborg, the SSD has since 1985 been an independent institute under the Social Science Faculty.

Mainly social science survey data, but also aggregate and statistical data files are stored.Following areas are covered:

Demographic characteristics
Economic behaviour and attitudes

Mass media as news coverer and creator of public opinion

Social institutions and behaviour
Organizational behaviour

Approximately half of the holdings are documented according to the ICPSR standard (OSIRIS format and machine-readable codebook). All documentation is in Swedish.
