WISDOM was founded in 1985; its activities
are partly based on financial support from the Ministry of Science and
Research.

Data collections:
The Data Archive holds about 500 data sets
in machine-readable form covering a wide range of topics in the social
and political sciences. The data stem from academic, governmental and
commercial institutions. To mention are:
- Austrian Microcensus Data
- Unemployment Statistics
- Multiple topic surveys of the IFES
- Special inquires from the commercial
Austrian survey institutes (IFES, FESSEL, GALLUP, SWS)
- Social Survey Data from academic
institutions and survey institutes

Data holding, retrieval & provision:
- The data sets are documented in the
WISDOM-documentation-system, which contains full descriptions of the
collected data and allows the search for studies according to the
key world list for social sciences and other criteria. Titles and
information about the acquired studies are announced in the
WISDOM-Journal.

Further services & facilities:
- WISDOM is organising a
Methoden-Club® (monthly round-table on methodological problems in
social science, together with the IFES).

Newsletter:
- WISDOM - Informationen - Daten -
Analysen (ISSN 1013-977x) is published quarterly. It is a platform
for discussion and development of social science research methods,
it allows an insight into the activities of the archive and informs
about available data sets.

Publication:
- Research-REPORT-series:
Research-Reports (mainly based on self-induced and contract research)
are published in the WISDOM-series. There are special issues on
different topics. Research methods, vocational choice, education,
age, health, etc.
