Eurobarometer study pack - Dataset and documentation

Standard Eurobarometer public opinion surveys are conducted on behalf of the European Commission. The Eurobarometer survey series is a unique programme from cross-national and cross-temporal comparative social research. Since the early seventies they are providing regular monitoring of social and political attitudes in the European publics. Representative national samples in all European Union (European Community) member countries are simultaneously interviewed in each spring and each autumn.


EURO-BAROMETER 43.1bis - Special Topic Subset

Wave 43.1bis of the standard Eurobarometer was carried out 1995 in all European Union member-countries. The topic subset contains different question modules concerning environmental issues:

  • Environment problems: on general - local - national level

  • Kinds of serious damage to the environments

  • Individual behaviour to protect environment

    • things done - things do more often - things willing to do for the sake of further generations

  • Attitudes to public action to protect environment

  • Effectiveness of public bodies: local - regional - national - EU - worldwide

  • Proposals with which governments can deal with environmental matters

  • Sources of information about the 'true state' of the environment

  • Introduction of environmental taxes, "eco taxes"

  • Respondents self-placement on a political 'left -right' scale

  • Demography with

    • Sex - Marital status - Age when finished education - Age

    • Household size - Children under 15

    • Occupation variables

    • Household income

    • Type and size of community - Region

    • Opinion leadership index

The provided study pack - a subset of Eurobarometer 43.1 (Study number: ZA 2639 / SSD 0510) - contains:

  • Standard archive study description

  • Codebook prepared as PDF file including

    • introductions to the fieldwork and the sample

    • variable list: - linked with

    • cross-tabulation/frequencies per country

  • appropriate numeric dataset as SPSS portable file (s2639sub.zip; 1.353 KB)

The PDF format can be read, browsed and printed by the "Acrobat Reader" software. You can install this software on your local PC or use the plug-in for your browser. The tools are available for all common computing platforms from Adobe (free copies).
